Khalil Ramos, Anthony Rosaldo talk about challenges as lead actors for 'Liwanag sa Dilim'

The highly anticipated and original Filipino musical Liwanag sa Dilim is set to take the theater stage in March 2025, featuring the songs of the OPM legend Rico Blanco.
Among the talented cast members bringing this story to life are Kapuso artists Khalil Ramos and Anthony Rosaldo, who will alternate for the lead role of Elesi.
In an interview with GMA News Online, the actors opened up about their challenges and triumphs as they prepared for the production.
A major theatrical production is no easy feat, especially for a jukebox musical that aims to bring fresh interpretations of such iconic songs. For Khalil, growing up with the music of Rivermaya and Rico Blanco gave him a head start, but the process still required intense preparation.
"Sa music, ako, kinalakihan ko yung mga kanta ng Rivermaya at ni Rico Blanco. So, kahit papano, medyo nasamot ko na yung lyrics at yung tone. Pero, siyempre, ginawa pa rin nilang kakaiba yung arrangements for the musical," he said.
"So, kinailangan kong aralin din kung paano pagagandahin pa lalo yung mga kanta ni Rico Blanco. Kasi on its own, napakaganda na rin yung mga kanta niya. So, paano pa natin i-improve? At yun, tsaka mataas yung mga kanta. So, kinailangan ko talaga mag-prepare."
Meanwhile, for Anthony, the challenge lay in shaping his character and tackling the demanding role of Elesi.
"Napakaganda nung songs ni Sir Rico Blanco. So, na-enjoy namin yung process talaga. Nagulat kami sa kung paano nabago yung arrangements for the show. Pero, story-wise, ako naman sa paghulma ng karakter ko, doon ako medyo talagang na-challenge. Kasi, siyempre, parang puso ng show si Elesi. So, dapat mabigyang-buhay siya ng maayos,” he said.
Anthony considers himself fortunate to work alongside highly skilled actors, from whom he continuously learns as every rehearsal becomes an opportunity for him to pick up something new.
As they will be alternating for the role of Elesi, both actors emphasized the importance of teamwork in creating an impactful performance. Without a previous version of the production to reference, collaboration was key in shaping their characters and the overall narrative.
"Siyempre, importante na magtulungan talaga. Especially, original 'to. So, wala naman kaming tinagpapasihan kung paano mag-rehearse. Kailangan talaga na mag-collaborate," Khalil said.
"Gaya ng sinabi ni Anthony kanina, we were lucky enough to be part of the collaborative process. So, creatively, nabuhos namin yung creativity namin. So, kailangan. Kailangan po namin magtulungan."
Anthony echoed this sentiment, highlighting the supportive atmosphere among the cast and crew.
"We're there for each other. I mean, one question away always. Kasi dapat available ka for everyone."
With the premiere of Liwanag sa Dilim fast approaching, the dedication of its cast shines through.
From rigorous vocal training to character development and ensemble work, Khalil and Anthony's journey is a testament to their passion for the craft. Their commitment, along with the rest of the talented team, ensures that the production will be a must-watch theatrical experience.
Fellow Kapuso Rita Daniela and other cast members, including promising actors such as CJ Navato, Nicole Omillo, Alexa Ilacad, and Vien King, will join Khalil and Anthony on stage.
Also part of the cast is Noemi Gonzales, Arnel Carrion, Boo Gabunada, Jon Abella, Raul Montesa, Rica Laguardia, Lani Ligot, Jasper Jimenez, Mark Tayag, Derrick Gozos, Chez Cuenca, Paji Arceo, Iya Villanueva, Lucylle Tan, Denzel Chang and Brianna Bunagan.
