Roderick Paulate recalls Dolphy's advice for him to stay in comedy

Before Roderick Paulate became one of Philippines' best comedians, he was actually an award-winning dramatic actor.

The "Batang Riles" star recalled on "Fast Talk with Boy Abunda" Friday how Dolphy himself talked him into staying put as a comedy actor.

"Sa set ng 'John And Marsha sa Probinsya,'" Roderick began. "May ginawa akong scene, na lalaki siya na 'Shirley, halika ka nga rito.' Pero yun pala si Rolly 'yung gusto niya puntahan," he recalled.

At that time, Roderick was still winning awards for his dramatic roles. "Pero siya [Dolphy] ang nagsabi, 'tawang-tawa kami sa'yo. 'Lika nga dito anak. Dick, yaw mo mag-comedy? Mag-comedy ka na lang. Ituloy mo na lang."

According to Roderick, the King of Comedy wanted him to stay put and keep on doing comedy. "Kailangan ng bago," he recalled Dolphy as saying.

It seems Roderick heeded Dolphy's advice because after "John and Marsha sa Probinsiya" screened in 1985, he went on to star in hit. comedy movies like "Mga Anak ni Facifica Falayfay," "Gorio and Tekla," "Petrang Kabayo" and sealed his reputation as one of Philippines' best comedians.

Roderick will star in the upcoming "Mga Batang Riles" which will premiere on GMA Prime on January 6.
