Hilda Koronel shares what it's like working with the late Lino Brocka
Hilda Koronel shared what it's like to work with the late National Artist for Film, Lino Brocka.
On Thursday's "Fast Talk with Boy Abunda," the award-winning veteran actress talked about her acting comeback with Jun Lana's upcoming film, "Sisa," and reminisced about her time working with Lino.
Hilda starred in the famed director's multi-awarded films, including "Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang" (1974), "Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag" (1975), and "Insiang" (1976), which are deemed classics in Philippine cinema.
According to the actress, Lino did not believe in acting workshops but they had "The Hilda Show" back in the day where "Insiang" started out as an episode.
"Sixteen pa lang ako nun and Lino said, 'I promise by the time you reach 18, before you reach 18, I'm gonna make you go to the top as the dramatic actress that you would be.' And he did," she said.
As to how he's like as a director, she shared that he would talk to her about a scene and what he wants from it.
"Kung gusto niyang kaliwa lang 'yung tears ko or sa kanan... 'Cause the lighting, very important kay Lino, so, 'Gusto ko dito bumagsak 'yung luha,' ganiyan, I do my best."
She added that Lino truly knew her in and out, including all of her heartaches, so he would encourage her to use her experiences in when it comes to their scenes.
"Alam niya lahat eh. Parts of 'Insiang' are parts of my life, some of the movies I have done like 'Hello Soldier' is part of my life. So, he picks a little bit of that and expands it to become a film. Alam niya kasi 'yung story ko talaga eh," she said.
Hilda has won honors from the FAMAS Awards, Gawad Urian, the Metro Manila Film Festival, and more.
In February, she received the first Monty Manibog Lifetime Achievement award in the inaugural Manila International Film Festival in Los Angeles, California.
