Arnold Clavio's piece of advice for aspiring journalists: 'Mahalin mo ‘yung trabaho, mahalin mo rin sarili mo'

Arnold Clavio, also known as Igan, shared words of wisdom for aspiring reporters, writers, and broadcasters after renewing his contract with GMA Network on Tuesday.

Given his decades-long experience in the journalism industry, the Kapuso broadcast journalist said that it is important to love the job but there should be balance.

“Mahalin niyo ‘yung trabaho niyo para mahalin kayo pabalik,” he told GMA News Online after the contract signing. “Pero sa nangyari sa ‘kin — mahalin mo ‘yung trabaho mo, pero balansehin mo.”

Back in mid-June, Igan suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. While driving home after playing golf, he felt a strange sensation on his right side and decided to stop at the nearest hospital. Days after, he assured the public that he is out of danger.

According to the news anchor, prioritizing one's health is important to last long in the industry.

“’Pag hindi niyo kaya, sabihin niyo sa boss niyo, na medyo kailangan ko na magpahinga. Kasi pati ‘yung mga sasabihin mo baka maapektuhan dahil hindi na gumagana utak mo, pagod na pala,” he said.

He added that his health scare was a “wake-up call na mabalanse.”

“Mahalin mo ‘yung trabaho mo, at the same time, mahalin mo rin ‘yung sarili mo. Mag-ingat ka sa sarili mo," he said.

Following his stroke, Igan had to undergo physical therapy and rehabilitation.

Although he is not fully recovered yet, he went back to work in August as he believes being back on air will help him recover.

“Parang iba ‘yung itutulong niyang energy sa akin para bumalik ‘yung dating ako,” he shared on “24 Oras.”

Unang Hirit,” the country’s longest-running morning show, is marking its 25th anniversary on December 6.
