Ashley Ortega on heavy ‘Pulang Araw’ scenes: ‘Alam ko pong ang hirap panuorin’
Ashley Ortega shared new behind-the-scenes snaps from “Pulang Araw,” expressing gratitude for the good feedback the show has been receiving.
On Instagram, the Sparkle star said, “Alam ko pong ang hirap panuorin pero mahalaga sa amin na isalaysay sa ating mga kababayan ang pinagdaanan ng ating mga comfort women noong panahon ng pagsakop ng mga hapon.”
“Oras [nang] marinig at malaman ang kanilang storya,” Ashley, who plays the role of Sister Manuela Apolonio, said.
Some of the photos Ashley shared were taken in the shooting set of one of the Japanese soldiers’ garrisons, where the Filipina comfort women are held captive.
“Comfort women” refers to the women who were subjected to sexual slavery by the Japanese imperial army in countries like the Philippines, Korea, and China during World War II.
The few remaining Filipina survivors, who are in their late 80s or 90s, have been fighting for reparations from the Philippine and Japanese governments for decades.
Ashley previously said on a “24 Oras” report that it is a big responsibility for her to portray the narrative of the comfort women through Sister Manuela.
“Gusto ko talagang bigyan ng justice ‘yung role para sa lahat ng comfort women. ‘Yun na rin ‘yung parang tulong ko sa kanila kasi I think it’s about time for their stories to be heard,” she said.
“Pulang Araw” airs weeknights on GMA Prime at 8 p.m. after “24 Oras.”
