Michelle Madrigal reveals that she is a survivor of child sexual abuse

[Trigger warning: Sexual abuse, child abuse]

Michelle Madrigal has bravely revealed that she is a survivor of sexual abuse.

In an Instagram post, the US-based former actress opened up about her struggles.

“To be completely transparent, I endured sexual abuse at a tender age for a number of years, a time when my innocence was cruelly taken, leading to a tumultuous adolescence,” Michelle said.

Following the abuse, she went through a rebellious phase because "shame and self-blame consumed me for years."

"I was angry, indifferent, seeking solace in drugs and alcohol to escape the overwhelming emotions, unworthiness, and fear. I often questioned why it happened to me,” she said.

Michelle added that she held onto this baggage “for nearly a decade” before going to therapy.

She said, “Unaware that I was experiencing PTSD, I carried this burden alone until I sought help from a therapist at 20.”

However, Michelle now understands where her rebellion stemmed from, seeks guidance from God, and aims “to use my voice and experiences to empower others to step forward and begin their healing journey.”

She said, “This year, in conversations with women, I was astonished to find that 3 out of 5 had encountered some form of sexual abuse.”

“My purpose in life is clear: to support survivors. I've always yearned to use my voice for a greater cause, and my mission is to help one survivor at a time feel acknowledged and secure, reassuring them that their story is significant," she added.

Now that she is a mom, Michelle also said that it is her responsibility to educate her daughter about serious issues like abuse.

“Past generations often lacked the knowledge or tools to address such issues, often sweeping them under the rug in different cultures. Many children don't feel safe enough to confide in anyone, let alone their parents, about their experiences," she said.

“I'm determined to change that narrative, to extend a helping hand, and foster an environment where openness and support prevail,” she added.

Michelle posted details of the US-based organization Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network (RAINN) where donations are accepted for their educational programs, awareness efforts, and other advocacy projects.

Michelle has been open about her healing journey online.

Following her divorce from Troy Woolfolk, Michelle said life could also mean “cultivating deeper self-awareness, self-compassion, and self-care." They have a daughter named Anika, born in 2017.

She revealed dating a man named Kyle in August 2022. However, split rumors started when the actress deleted their Instagram photos and talked about healing.

Michelle is based in Texas and is now working as a realtor.

The Philippines has several organizations that support survivors of sexual abuse. The Philippine Commission on Women has a complete list of Violence Against Women and Children Hotlines on their website.

A barangay also has a Violence Against Women (VAW) Desk, which will assist survivors in getting the help they need.
