Year in Review: 10 celebrity breakups in 2023
This year saw our hearts break into a million little pieces as we witnessed celebrity couple after celebrity couple end their relationship.
Adding salt to injury was the fact that most of them had been together for such a long time and appeared to have the most ideal of partnerships.
Before the year ends, allow us to run down the breakups that got everybody in their feels this year. Consider this a last look back at the pain and the heartbreak before starting anew, healed and refreshed for 2024.
1. Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott
In January, People Magazine reported that Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott were rumored to have ended their on-again, off-again relationship. The couple, parents to Stormie and Aire, had been dating since 2017.
The couple never addressed the split rumors, but in April, Kylie went public with award-winning actor Timothee Chalamet. In September, the pair brought out the PDA and shared several kisses at a Beyonce Renaissance show.
2. Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn
Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn ended their six-year relationship in April, reportedly due to the differences in their personalities. The split tugged at fans’ heartstrings in the worst way, because they thought Taylor and Joe would stay together forever. In fact, they thought Taylor’s album “Lover” was largely influenced by their relationship.
But life goes on and later in the year, Taylor started dating football star Travis Kelce.
3. Andrea Brillantes and Ricci Rivero
Andre Brillantes and Ricci Rivero have been in a relationship since 2022, and when they broke up, it caused such a stir it garnered reactions from international stars like Rose of Blackpink and Sabrina Carpenter.
It was Ricci who confirmed their breakup in June, explaining they first went on a cool-off in April and officially split up in May.
According to Ricci, their breakup was caused by many reasons, including the viral video where the actress caught a woman in Ricci's condo.
Los Baños, Laguna councilor and beauty queen Leren Mae Bautista was dragged into the mess, which Leren and Ricci both denied.
In October however, Ricci and Leren both came out about their relationship.
4. Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez
After two years of marriage, Ariana Grande and her husband Dalton Gomez were rumored to have separated in July.
They started dating in 2020 and got married in an intimate ceremony in 2021.
Fans were shocked when it was reported that Ariana is dating her “Wicked” co-star, Ethan Slater. The news came out days after the split rumors made the rounds.
Ariana and Dalton have yet to confirm the breakup news, as Ariana and Ethan have also yet to confirm their relationship.
5. Kris Aquino and Mark Leviste
Kris Aquino first announced a pause in her relationship with Mark Leviste in July, due to her health conditions.
In a follow-up post, the Queen of All Media explained that long-distance relationships are difficult in itself, that they both deserve to live with peaceful hearts, and thatshe felt Mark was not ready for a serious relationship, especially given her health conditions.
Kris and Mark revealed their relationship early this year. The actress and host said that she found both love and friendship in the Batangas Vice Governor.
6. Britney Spears and Sam Ashgari
Britney Spears and her husband Sam Ashgari confirmed they split up in August.
Sam filed for divorce citing “irreconcilable differences,” and the divorce petition says they have been separated since July.
In a statement, the Princess of Pop said, "I couldn’t take the pain anymore honestly.”
Britney and Sam got engaged in 2021 and then married in 2022, about a year after a judge dissolved a controversial 14-year conservatorship that had barred the singer from handling her own life and finances.
7. Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas
Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas revealed in September that they were getting a divorce. The couple released a joint statement and said that it was a mutual, amicable decision.
Joe and the “Game of Thrones” star first sparked divorce rumors when the Jonas Brother was seen without his wedding band and getting in touch with divorce lawyers.
Joe and Sophie met in 2016 and tied the knot in May 2019. They welcomed their first child in 2020 and another daughter in 2022.
8. Ryu Jun Yeol and Hyeri
After six years together, Ryu Jun Yeol and Hyeri broke up in November, their agencies confirmed.
South Korean media outlet News1 first reported the news, saying the couple had a long period of consideration before deciding to just be friends.
Hyeri and Ryu Jun Yeol went public with their relationship in August 2017 after starring in the hit K-drama "Reply 1988."
9. Yuzuru Hanyu and wife
Yuzuru Hanyu, retired Japanese figure skating star, announced his divorce from his wife in November. This comes three months after he publicized their marriage in early August.
The two-time Olympic figure skating champion blamed the divorce on media "stalking" and harassing the ex-couple.
Yuzuru Hanyu said that "suspicious" people had visited his home and reporters had invaded his privacy since he announced his marriage.
10. Kathryn Bernardo, Daniel Padilla
The breakup news that rocked showbiz this year. Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla had been together for 11 years before calling it quits.
Kathryn and Daniel confirmed their split on the evening of November 30 in separate Instagram statements.
The 27-year-old actress said that she and Daniel have been "drifting apart" for a while now, and they had to ultimately accept that they couldn't go back to what they used to be.
The actor also thanked Kathryn for the beautiful memories they had together during their 11 years together and concluded his post by professing his eternal love for her.
As fans began processing the breakup, they noticed Daniel deleted his breakup Instagram statement. Alas, Kathryn posted there was "no looking back, only moving forward."
