Jake Zyrus shares GQ feature on the last day of Pride Month: 'A little reminder that it’s okay to be myself'
Jake Zyrus is one proud transgender man as he bared his transition journey with GQ magazine.
On Instagram Thursday, the singer greeted his fellow LGBTQIA+ brothers and sisters with “Happy Pride Month,” followed by a little reminder that “it’s okay to be myself.”
“Thank you to those who have fought and continue to fight for our freedom of expression and acceptance,” Jake added.
According to his interview with GQ, the current California resident feels right at home in America.
“It’s not perfect—I still experience shitty moments with people here—but I still feel more accepted, you know?” He told GQ.
In his feature story, Jake shared how he didn’t feel like himself growing up, especially when wearing girly dresses while performing in a vast crowd.
Now that he has found his way to who he is, the 30-year-old singer is excited to go back onstage as he kicks off his US tour not — as Charice but as Jake.
"My dream is that someday, they’ll say, yeah, the music is still there. Whether it’s Charice or Jake Zyrus, I’m a singer,” Jake said on GQ.
The singer didn't hide his transition to the public. Before starting the process, Jake opened up about the “dark place” he was in before starting his transition.
Earlier this year, he finally reintroduced himself as a transgender man, posting a shirtless selfie and saying, “Sa wakas, komportable sa nakikita ko. Hindi ako humihingi ng opinyon. Para ito sa mga kapwa ko transgender.”
In his Instagram post, he thanked David Foster, who took care of him through the years as his mentor and godfather, GQ writer Raymond Ang "for allowing me to express myself," and photographer Martin Diegor "for capturing the real me."
He also thanked his fans.
“To my Jakester, mahal ko kayong lahat. To LGBTQIA+ community, this one’s for all of you. Mabuhay tayong lahat,” he concluded.
We are happy for you, Jake. Happy Pride Month, indeed! — LA, GMA News
