Michael V., 'Bubble Gang' cast reveal where they get inspiration for comedy sketches

Comedy is everywhere these days—from TikTok stars with huge followings to stand-up performances now available on Netflix, people who want to laugh have many choices for their entertainment.

In such as a world, how does a late night television show like "Bubble Gang," which celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, endure?

In a media conference on Friday, Kapuso comedy genius Michael V said the secret lies with the show's symbiotic relationship with society.

"Kung anong nangyayari sa paligid, 'yun talaga 'yung nire-reflect nung show," he said. "Pero that doesn't mean na maiiwan na ganun lang. We have our creative license para gumawa ng additional content na sasaluhin naman ng society and social media. Kumbaga para siyang circle of life."

("Whatever happens in society, that's what the show reflects. But that doesn't mean that we stop there. We have our creative license to create additional content that will also makes its way to society and social media. It's like a circle of life.")

"'Yun 'yung inaasahan namin na mangyayari pa rin in the future na hindi na lang limited sa mga tao lang talaga na nakikita natin sa kalye, na mga kapitbahay namin, kundi pati sa daigdig na rin ng social media," he added. "Magkakaroon na tayo ng multiverse of comedies."

("That's one of the things we expect to happen in the future, that it's not going to be just limited to the people we see on the streets, our neighbors, but also in the world of social media. We'll have a multiverse of comedies.")

Paolo Contis said the magic of the show is their socially relevant content.

"I believe mas magiging aggressive ang Bubble Gang sa mga socially relevant sketches ngayon. Kasi feeling ko nga, sa seryoso ng mga tao ngayon, sa seryoso ng buhay ngayon, kailangan medyo matawa tayo ng konti," he said.

("I believe Bubble Gang will be more aggressive with the socially relevant sketches. Because I feel that people nowadays are serious, life nowadays is serious, we need a little laughter.")

"Kung mapapansin natin minsan, 'yung mga characters biglang mag-e-evolve na ganito mas dikit sa kung paano 'yung nakikita natin talaga sa community," added Sef Cadayona.

("We can see sometimes, the characters suddenly evolve in a way that is close to what we see in the community.")

The cast members of "Bubble Gang" also revealed where they get their ideas and inspiration in creating new comedy sketches.

Archie Alemania said he watches other media such as old and new movies and videos on social media.

"Kung saan man makakakuha ng mga bagong antics, bagong facial expression, the way you say things, mga linya, ganun, dun ako kumukuha ng kung ano 'yung nababagay sa gagawin naming sketch. Humuhugot ako sa mga napapanood ko dati kung pano 'yung atake," he said.

("Wherever you can see new antics, new facial expression, the way you say things, lines, that's where I get stuff to apply to our sketches. I get ideas on how to approach things from those I watched before.")

For Tuesday Vargas, meanwhile, comedy itself is a way of life and a part of her personality.

"'Yung comedy sa akin, hindi siya hobby, mannerism siya para sa akin. Second nature ko na kahit napaka ordinaryong bagay, nahahanapan ko siya ng kakatwan," she said.

("Comedy for me is not a hobby; it's a mannerism for me. It's second nature to me to find humor even in the most ordinary things.")

"Araw-araw ng buhay ko ay isang malaking palabas, isang komedya, na makatotohanan at hindi pretentious," she added.

("Every day my life is a huge show, a comedy, that is realistic and not pretentious.")

Like Tuesday, Chariz Solomon finds inspiration for her comedy in her own life. With the low socialization due to the pandemic, she focused on her daily life a mom.

"Ang mga roles ko kasi lagi is asawa na furious, bungangerang asawa," she said. "Somewhere inside every wife, merong ganoon eh, so siguro 'yung sa akin lang, nailalabas ko talaga."

("My usual role is a furious wife, a nagging wife. Somewhere inside every wife, there's always that, so I can take it out and release it.")

"'Yung pagiging ina, 'yung maturity ko as a woman, malaking bagay 'yung ginawa niya for my career especially dito po sa Bubble Gang."

("My motherhood, my maturity as a woman, that contributed a lot to my career especially in Bubble Gang.")

Valeen Montenegro agreed that the relatability of real-life situations helps in engaging the audience.

Meanwhile, Kim De Leon, Kokoy De Santos, Dasuri Choi, and Faye Lorenzo said they look up to their co-actors in the show and learn as much as they can from the veteran comedians.

"Isa din sa main inspiration is the show itself," Analyn Barro said. "Kasi 'yung platform nung show talaga is magpatawa ng tao so 'yun palang parang inspired na kami para gawin ang lahat ng mga bagay para ma-fulfill 'yung goal namin which is nga magpatawa and maka-inspire din ng viewers."

("One of the main inspiration is the show itself. Because the show's platform is to bring laughter so that alone makes us inspired to do everything we can to fulfill our goal which is to make people laugh and inspire the viewers.")
