John ‘Sweet’ Lapus reveals he cried after getting ‘Jose & Maria’s Bonggang Villa’ directing stint
John “Sweet” Lapus couldn’t help but cry tears of joy when he was offered to direct “Jose & Maria’s Bonggang Villa.”
In a recent press conference held at Luxent Hotel in Quezon City, the director and comedian said he was surprised to receive the offer for the project headlined by Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes.
“Naiyak ako dahil noong panahon na ’yon, tulad nating lahat, ay nababaliw na rin ako. Answered prayer ’to at the same time,” he said. “Biyaya ng Panginoon ang buong project na ito.”
Sweet said he had accepted that he wasn’t as in demand for acting projects as he used be, even calling himself “laos na artista.” This led him to explore other ways to develop and improve his craft.
“’Yung mga kaibigan ko, sinasabi na ’wag [kong] sinasabi ’yon. No, kailangan kong aminin because dahil doon ko na-embrace itong bagong career ko as a director,” he said.
“In-embrace ko siya and ’yung energy, tuloy-tuloy na. ’Yung mga project, tuloy-tuloy na dumating,” Sweet added. “Tinanggap ko na ’yung katotohanan. Ang daming bagong baklang artista.”
Sweet said among the things he did to keep the opportunities coming was to study different types of art.
To which, Dingdong said: “Direk Sweet kasi is an artist at ang isang artist, parating nag-eevolve and I think natural progression talaga ng isang artist ang pagkakaroon ng maraming destinasyon.”
“Jose & Maria’s Bonggang Villa” is inspired by Marian and Dingdong’s short clips at home, which they shot during the lockdowns. It revolves around a couple who will try to bring a bed and breakfast venue back to life.
The show, which will premiere May 14, is a dream come true for the Kapuso couple.
Apart from directing the upcoming GMA-7 series, Sweet is also one of the writers of “Daddy’s Gurl.” – RC, GMA News
