Shalala passes away


Shalala has passed away. He was 61.

The comedian and TV host died Wednesday morning (June 23) after battling pulmonary tuberculosis, his brother Anthony Reyes confirmed with GMA News Online.

"Napapaiyak po ako, sandali," Anthony said before giving more details about Shalala's final moments.

Shalala was confined at the National Kidney Institute last week and was discharged after showing signs of improvement.

On Tuesday however, Shalala was rushed back to the hospital, to the Fe Del Mundo Medical Center in Banawe, Quezon City this time around.

On Instagram Wednesday morning, Shalala's best friend Marivic Nieto posted photos of Shalala from the ICU, asking for prayers and help. He also said Shalala tested negative for COVID-19.

Carmelito M. Reyes in real life, Shalala was born January 21, 1960.

He is well-known in the entertainment industry as "Shalala," a name given to him by late starmaker German "Kuya Germs" Moreno.

He brought laughter and joy to audiences throughout the years through several TV programs, including GMA-7's "Walang Tulugan with the Master Showman" and "Tweet Biz," where he became known for his iconic "blind item" segments.

He also appeared in the films "“Ang Darling Kong Aswang” (2009), “Agimat at Enteng Kabisote” (2010), “My House Husband: Ikaw Na” (2011), and “Echosering Frog” (2014).

Before the phone interview ended, Anthony gave a short message to his Kuya Lito.

"Maraming-maraming salamat po sa lahat, Kuya Lito. Ikaw ang naging sandalan naming magkakapatid. Ikaw na nagtaguyod sa pamilya. Hirap kami kung wala ka. Maraming-maraming salamat sa tulong na ginawa po para sa’ming lahat.”
