Muslim actor Abdul Rahman on ‘Legal Wives’ role: ‘It got me in touch with my religion’

“Starstruck” alumnus and Muslim actor Abdul Rahman has said that his character on “Legal Wives” helped him get more in touch with his religion.

In an exclusive interview on Friday, the actor shared that he would play a poor Muslim boy on the upcoming drama series.

“Relatively easy [to portray]. Muslim na ako eh,” said Abdul.

He revealed that an imam helped the cast prepare for their roles.

“Matagal na akong ’di nakakapag-usap sa isang imam. It was actually refreshing getting to talk to him,” said the actor.

“Parang it got me in touch with my religion, which is a good feeling.”

Abdul also shared that one of his concerns in the drama was pronouncing the Maranao words properly.

“Iba siya from Arabic ... there are similarities,” he said. “I’d ask him [imam] just to be sure. I don’t wanna mispronounce Maranao words.”

As a Muslim, Abdul said he also had struggles in the past about his religion.

“I was raised a Muslim pero when I’ve had some conflicts, temptations, mag-convert na lang sa Christianity. Pero I decided na it’s my choice to be a Muslim kasi I enjoy it and I feel it’s right for me in the end, kaya naging choice ko,” he said.

In the upcoming drama series, Abdul will star opposite Shayne Sava, who will play a Muslim girl and his love interest.

Set to premiere soon on GMA, “Legal Wives” follows the story of a Maranao Muslim royal who has three wives.

Aside from Abdul, the drama will feature Andrea Torres, Dennis Trillo, Alice Dixson, Bianca Umali, and Cherie Gil. – RC, GMA News
