From Sporty Spice to solo singer-songwriter: Melanie C talks about her journey
What happens to life after Spice Girls?
For Melanie C a.k.a. Sporty Spice, being part of the iconic British pop group was actually the start of another journey towards her own successful career as a solo music artist.
In an exclusive virtual interview with GMA News Online, the 46-year-old singer-songwriter also talked about her new self-titled album which she released during the pandemic.
“[I have] been really inspired by two things,” Melanie C told us over Zoom.
“I would say, the impact on stage of the Spice Girls. That was huge. You know it gave me opportunity to be Sporty Spice, to really get into those really powerful lyrics,” she added.
“Also, DJ-ing. I love dance music. And I want to make an album that would make people dance. But you see, you could listen to, you know. It’s important to me [to] have some really strong messages within the songs as well.”
Even after the group’s disbandment in 1998, Melanie C is still very happy to have been part of the Spice Girls.
“I absolutely love having the opportunity to be Sporty Spice in the Spice Girls and… because I think it really allows me to express very different parts of my personality,” she said.
“[I] always have a lots of fun with the girls. It’s very collaborative, it’s [a] very mature thing. We work together, we really play on each of us strength,” she added.
Still, Melanie C is “different” from Sporty Spice, in a way.
“And then on the solo works, I think it's soul search a little bit more. You know, I really dig deep into my feelings and emotions. So I’d say maybe I just... maybe a little more serious when it comes to my solo work. And I’m a little bit more fun when it comes to Spice Girls,” the singer said.
“I think, for me, because I’m really expressing something very personal. You know, it gives me the opportunity to really look at those feelings and try to, you know, understand it and just talk about those emotion that I felt in different periods of my life,” she added.
Formed in 1994, the Spice Girls originally include Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Mel B (Scary Spice) and Geri Horner, formerly Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice).
