Henry Cavill says there’s a bit of himself in his character Sherlock on ‘Enola Holmes’

Henry Cavill has temporarily exchanged his Superman cape for detective tools as he plays Sherlock on “Enola Holmes” with Millie Bobby Brown.

GMA News Online was among the members of the press in Asia to have the opportunity to chat with the “Superman” star during a virtual roundtable interview for the film.

“We wanted to make sure that the character is true to the character he is while remaining useful and doing the job that he is required in this story as a supporting character to Enola Holmes,” Henry said during the roundtable.

The poster released by Netflix recently for “Enola Holmes” reads, “a new perspective on the great detective,” and it has been widely observed in the film.

The reason for the different portrayal of Sherlock, Henry said, was because he put a bit of himself into the character.

“As a character that required that emotional connection, it was important for both myself and [director Harry Bradbeer] to delve into who I am as a person emotionally and really reach in and apply that to Sherlock Holmes and that is as where we did most of our prep and work,” Henry explained.

Henry said he and the director would play around options to make sure that the character was still the Sherlock that everyone knew “but with the emotional hooks which allows Enola to be Enola.”

Henry said he enjoyed seeing a lot of his “true self shining out through the character in Enola Holmes.”

“While I think that’s something one shouldn’t do all the time, I think it’s something that I want to do more of because it’s, I do enjoy doing that and I enjoy applying my personal touch into the character,” the actor said.

Henry said it was a collaborative work with director Harry to make his character work with a twist.

The British actor mentioned how they dug deep into his life to be able to mold his character as Sherlock.

“Harry also focused a lot on me as a human being and he asked me questions about my past, my childhood, and my hopes and my dreams and he then applied those kinds of things, those were the keys he turned during performances,” he said.

“I enormously enjoyed that collaborative process where I could discuss with the director whether I wanted to take the character extremely left or extremely right or whichever direction I wanted to take them and it would become a discussion and it would actually mold the character and tell the story in the way we wanted to do,” he added.

On “Enola Holmes,” Henry plays Sherlock, the brother of the protagonist and titular character played by Millie.

“Enola Holmes” will premiere on Netflix Sept. 23.

The film follows Enola who wakes up one morning to find that her mother (Helena Bonham Carter) has disappeared and she is suddenly under the care of her brothers Sherlock and Mycroft (Sam Claflin), who send her to school to prepare and become a “proper” young lady.

Refusing her brothers’ wishes, she escapes in disguise to search for her mother in London. On her way to the city, she crosses paths with young Lord Tewksbury (Louis Partridge), who has also ran away from home.

“Enola Holmes” also features Adeel Akhtar, Fiona Shaw, Frances de la Tour, Burn Gorman, and Susan Wokoma. – RC, GMA News
