YouTuber Mika Salamanca arrested in Hawaii for violating mandated 14-day quarantine
Mika Salamanca was arrested by authorities in Honolulu, Hawaii on Friday for violating the mandated 14-day quarantine for travelers.
According to Honolulu news station KITV4 ABC Island News, the 20-year-old Filipina YouTuber arrived in Honolulu on July 6 and four days later, the Hawaii Tourism Authority learned she was out in public.
The Hawaii attorney general’s office was shown videos of her dancing in a store and dining out when she was supposed to be in quarantine, prompting the order of arrest.
Mika's arrest comes two days after she aired out her side in a vlog, saying that law enforcers told her she wasn't in trouble.
"Inaamin ko po na nagkamali ako noong time na dumating ako dito sa Hawaii at agad po kaming lumabas," she had said. "As far as I can remember na-settle na namin yun."
She said that people had reported and filed complaints against her so authorities visited her in the house she was spending quarantine in.
"Sila po mismo nagsabi sakin na, 'You're not in trouble. If you're negative, you can go out'," she said.
Mika and her companions had tested negative for COVID-19. Still, she said she completed her quarantine, which was lifted on July 20.
"Kung meron po talaga akong nilabag, feeling ko dapat ngayon nasa presinto na ako. Pero lahat ng law enforcers na nakausap namin sinabi na we're not in trouble and we're good," she said.
In a statement to KITV, Attorney General Clare E. Connors said, "None of my investigators would convey that information, as it is incorrect. The fact that Ms. Salamanca has so many followers makes her actions that much more dangerous and concerning. The spread of misinformation can have very severe consequences during an emergency situation like we are in now."
Mika's relatives had posted a $2,000 bail on her behalf, the report added.
She is the 24th person on O‘ahu arrested by the Department of the Attorney General for violating the travel self-quarantine order.
