'CONFIDENTLY BEAUTIFUL WITH A HEART'

Pia, Catriona, and other beauty queens help COVID-19 relief efforts

Filipina beauty queens have proved that they are truly "confidently beautiful with a heart."

In Cata Tibayan's report for "24 Oras," Miss Universe 2015 and 2018 Pia Wurtzbach and Catriona Gray helped in the relief efforts for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Catriona has partnered with Young Focus Philippines to donate rice to daily wage earners who were affected by the enhanced community quarantine.

Pia, meanwhile, has distributed face masks, N95 masks, and face shields for healthcare workers battling COVID-19.

Miss Universe 2011 third runner-up Shamcey Supsup is also raising funds to purchase personal protective equipment for healthcare workers.

Miss World 2013 Megan Young, meanwhile, partnered with a chef to give packed meals to frontliners. She is also helping Aetas sell vegetables and fruits.

2018 Miss Globe Philippines Michele Gumabao launched the "Your 200 pesos" donation drive to raise relief packs for frontliners, poor families, and the homeless.

Two-time Bb. Pilipinas second runner-up Samantha Bernardo and Miss Eco International 2019 first runner-up Maureen Montagne also supported campaigns to feed families in Palawan and Siargao.

The enhanced community quarantine, which has been extended to May 15 in high-risk areas, has affected the livelihood of Filipino workers. Many families found themselves depending on government aid to survive.

Medical frontliners also risk exposure to COVID-19 as the number of cases in the Philippines continues to rise. As of Monday, the country has 7,777 confirmed cases with 511 deaths and 932 recoveries. —MGP, GMA News
