Iza Calzado details COVID-19 ordeal, reveals survivor's guilt
Iza Calzado revealed that she is experiencing survivor's guilt after recovering from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
In Nelson Canlas' report for "24 Oras," the actress shared the she also suffered from a lung infection while fighting COVID-19.
After finally testing negative for the virus, Iza said she becomes emotional when she sees the number of people who did not make it.
"Umiiyak talaga ako," she said. "It hits you eh. Na parang, how come I survived and they did not? Some people are losing loved ones in three days. Di ba, 'yung parang one minute they're there, the next they're not. I know what that's like."
"I kind of wish that I was able to give some of my energy to the others. Perhaps we could have survived this together," she added.
Iza said her condition worsened quickly and her body deteriorated when antibiotics were injected through IV.
"I started crying 'yun nga kasi lumala 'yung pneumonia so hindi ako makahinga on my own," she said.
During her ordeal, Iza said verbalized for the first time her desire to have children.
"Sabi ko hindi ako puwede pang mamatay kasi wala pa akong anak," she said. "This is something I pushed back consciously because I wanted to be ready. You know, when you're faced with a life-and-death situation, you will want pala talaga."
Iza considers her survival a miracle and she wants to help others heal from the disease.
She will donate her blood to the Philippine General Hospital, which will attempt to treat severe cases with convalescent plasma transfusion.
As of Tuesday, the Philippines has 3,764 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 177 deaths and 84 recoveries. --MGP, GMA News
