'Goblin' actress Go Soo Jung's untimely death is the latest in a string of heartbreaks for fans of Korean pop culture


Bad news travels fast, especially in the era of smartphones and social media.

Go Soo Jung, the "Goblin" actress whose death was announced Wednesday, is just the latest in the string of heartbreaks among fans of Korean pop culture.

Earlier in October 2019, K-pop star Sulli was found dead in her home. She was known to have a long struggle with online bullying.

A month after the tragedy, Sulli's friend Goo Hara was also found dead in her home, shocking K-pop fans all over the world. Goo, who reportedly tried to take her own life in May, struggled with a number of issues.

But two years earlier, echoes of such problems had started to ring. In December 2017, K-pop idol Kim Jonghyun was found unconscious in a Seoul apartment.

According to an AFP report, suicide is among the top causes for people under 40 in South Korea. Mental illness still carried a taboo, dissuading many to seek help.
