Most Filipinos are pro-American, and so am I — Pia Wurtzbach

Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach conducted an Ask Me Anything (AMA) on Reddit on Saturday and she was asked, "What is your personal thought on American culture opposed to anywhere else?"

Wurtzbach replied, "In the Philippines, it's very Americanized. If you go to the Philippines, compared to the other neighboring Asian countries, on TV we have American series, TV shows, the movies as well. Almost everybody speaks English."

"We're very pro-American, I would say almost everybody," she continued, "I dare say 1 percent — and I'm sure the nerds are going to correct me on this but — I'd say just about 1 percent are not pro-American. Most Filipinos are pro-American, and so am I!"

Aside from TV shows and movies, the Philippines has also experienced an influx of foreign theater productions ("Wicked," "Chicago," and "Singin' in the Rain" were all recently staged in Manila), music festivals and concerts headlined by American artists, (Taylor Swift and Katy Perry have been in the country twice; Madonna and Kanye West are slated to perform in Manila this year) and not to mention all the foreign brands and restaurants that have set up shop in the country (Swedish multinational fast-fashion giant H&M has opened multiple branches in the country, joining Forever21, Old Navy, American Eagle Outfitters, and more)—all perhaps proof of a very welcoming market.

However, several groups — the 1 percent, as Wurtzbach put it — also remain vocal against the United States' presence in the country.

Just hours after Wurtzbach proclaimed that she does not see any problems with American presence in the Philippines, Gabriela and Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago volunteered time to talk to the beauty queen about her stance.

Rallies are also done in protest of partnerships with the US like the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA).

Militant groups, like the League of Filipino Students, claim that EDCA violates the Constitution, national sovereignty, and territorial integrity by allowing the return of US military bases.

During her homecoming visit, Wurtzbach defended her statement during the Miss Universe coronation night, saying "presence" and "bases" are different. — APG, GMA News
