Classes suspended in Marikina on Monday for Palaro 2023 opening

Monday-July 31 classes in all levels in Marikina City were suspended to pave the way for the opening of this year’s Palarong Pambansa, Mayor Marcelino Teodoro said Sunday.

Lusito Santos reported on Super Radyo dzBB that work in the local government was suspended as well as Marikina City hosts Palaro 2023.

Amid the ongoing school break, the Department of Education (DepEd) is currently holding a voluntary three- to five-week National Learning Camp with hopes to improve learner performance and teacher capacity.

This year's Palarong Pambansa is the first in nearly three years since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country.

The opening program will be on Monday, while the competition proper will be from August 1 to August 5.

According to Dano Tingcungco's Sunday report on 24 Oras Weekend, 25,000 delegates were expected at the Palaro, which was also expected to draw in 30,000 spectators.

Most of the delegates would be billeted in the city's schools.

Teodoro said that it was "all systems go" for the Palarong Pambansa, despite the inclement weather.

"Tuloy ang opening bukas. All systems go tayo... rain or shine. Ang maaaring mabago lang ay 'yung mga activities, pwedeng malimitahan," he said in a dzBB interview.
