Commonwealth Avenue portion closed temporarily for MRT7 work

Some lanes of Commonwealth Avenue eastbound in Quezon City were closed temporarily on Sunday morning to give way to work on the Metro Rail Transit Line 7 (MRT7) project.

The affected lanes are those from near University Avenue to before Tandang Sora Avenue, going toward Fairview, according to a report by Carlo Mateo on Super Radyo dzBB.

This is due to the rafters or beams that were being installed using cranes for the footbridge that will connect to the MRT7 Tandang Sora Station.

The safety manager of the MRT7 project asked motorists for understanding due to the inconvenience this may cause.

The Department of Transportation earlier said the road closure will only be until 4 a.m. Sunday.

However, the activity could not be finished in time, the safety manager said.

The closed lanes are expected to be opened by 10 a.m. Sunday.

Meanwhile, a zipper lane for motorists heading toward Fairview was opened using a portion of Commonwealth Avenue going toward Quezon Memorial Circle.

As of 6:20 a.m., the traffic was not that heavy yet although there was a slight buildup as a truck stalled.

At 11:35 a.m. however, the closed lanes were not opened yet to motorists.

Traffic was slow going toward Quezon Memorial Circle, according to a follow-up report by Carlo Mateo.

The safety manager of the MRT7 project asked the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority to allow them to finish their activity until 1 p.m.

The MRT-7's 22-kilometer stretch will have 14 stations: Quezon North Avenue Joint Station, Quezon Memorial Circle, University Avenue, Tandang Sora, Don Antonio, Batasan, Manggahan, Doña Carmen, Regalado, Mindanao Avenue, Quirino, Sacred Heart, Tala, and San Jose del Monte.

The DOTr earlier said that there will be partial operations at the stations from North Avenue Station to Quirino Station by late 2025.

Once in full operation, the MRT-7 is expected to reduce travel time from Quezon City to San Jose Del Monte in Bulacan to 35 minutes. —KG, GMA Integrated News
