Baguio to get colder due to Amihan

The temperature in Baguio City is seen to further drop due to the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan), according to PAGASA on Monday.

In Nico Waje’s Monday report on “Saksi,” PAGASA weather specialist Chenel Dominguez explained that the Amihan season arrived late due to the consecutive tropical storms that hit the country last year, unlike before were the weather was cold during the last of December or early January.

According to PAGASA, Benguet recorded its lowest temperature last January 7 with 13°C.

Meanwhile, the lowest temperature in Baguio City was recorded last January 13 at 13.8°C.

“Inaasahan natin possible na sa mga susunod na araw makapagtala tayo ng single digit na temperatura. Nung mga past Amihan season natin, nakakapagtala tayo ng 9°C, 8°C, 7°C so hindi natin tinatanggal yung posibilidad na makaranas tayo ulit tayo ng ganung temperatura para sa mga kababayan natin lalo na Baguio,” Dominguez said.

(We expect that it is possible to record single-digit temperatures in the following days. In the past Amihan seasons, we have recorded 9°C, 8°C, and 7°C so we do not rule out the possibility that we might experience these temperatures in Baguio.)

If the temperature reaches 3°C to 4°C, places in high elevations would experience andap or frost.

The cold weather is seen to last until March before the dry season. The Amihan is also expected to prevail over the Visayas this week or in the following week.

General physician Dr. Gerald Belandres advised the public to protect themselves from acute respiratory tract infections like colds, coughing and sore throat.

Individuals may also experience high blood pressure during the cold weather.

He said these can be avoided by dressing warmly, drinking water, and sharing body warmth with partners or loved ones.—Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News
