Signal No. 1 up in Kalayaan Islands due to TD Romina

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 was hoisted over the Kalayaan Islands due to Tropical Depression Romina, which is outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility, state weather bureau PAGASA said Sunday morning.

As of 10:00 a.m., the center of Romina was spotted at 365 kilometers south of Kalayaan, Palawan (Pag-asa Island).

Romina is moving north northeastward at 30 km/h with maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 70 km/h, and central pressure of 1004 hPa.

The tropical depression has strong winds extending outwards up to 200 km from the center.

As of 11 a.m., PAGASA said Romina and a shear line will bring rains over several parts of the country.

The Kalayaan Islands will experience intense to torrential rains (>200 mm) from Sunday to Monday noon. This may result in widespread incidents of severe flooding and landslides.

Heavy to intense rains (100-200 mm), meanwhile, may pour over the rest of Palawan, possibly causing numerous flooding events and landslides.

The provinces of Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Antique, Aklan, Capiz, Iloilo, and Northern Samar will also have moderate to heavy rains (50-100 mm), which may lead to localized flooding and landslides. —Giselle Ombay/RF, GMA Integrated News
