Marcos tasks DOST to improve warning systems during tropical cyclones

President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Monday tasked the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to improve the warning systems for the public whenever a natural calamity hits the country.

''Una, inaatasan ko ang DOST na pagbutihin ang kanilang warning system upang makapagbigay ng napapanahong babala sa mga panganib na dulot ng mga bagyo,'' Marcos said this during his visit to Talisay, Batangas.

(I have tasked the DOST to improve the warning system to give timely warnings on the possible danger brought by tropical cyclones.)

A village in Barangay Sampaloc was hard hit by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine weeks ago.

Marcos also directed the DOST to work with the Department of the Interior and Local Government to ensure an effective way of communication whenever there is a tropical cyclone so that the safety of residents will be guaranteed.

He also tasked the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to review and study their disaster response measures to ensure that immediate aid will be given to affected residents.

Marcos said he also ordered the Department of Public Works and Highways to make sure that the roads and bridges have slope protection design so that they will be suitable in the changing climate.

The President had declared November 4, 2024 as a Day of National Mourning for the victims of heavy rains, flooding, and strong winds brought by Kristine.

Marcos reiterated his sympathies for those affected by Kristine.

''Nais ko pong ipaabot ang aming taos-pusong pakikiramay sa bawat Pilipinong naapektuhan ng Bagyong Kristine,'' the President said.

(I want to extend my deepest sympathies to each and every Filipino who was affected by Kristine.)

Government data showed that the death toll remained at 146, with 126 still for validation. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
