Kristine intensifies into typhoon outside PAR
Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (international name: Trami) has intensified into a typhoon outside of the Philippine Area of Responsibility, the state weather bureau PAGASA said Saturday afternoon.
At 3 p.m., Kristine was located 905 km west of Bacnotan, La Union, with maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 150 km/h, moving westward at 20 km/h.
Kristine exited the PAR on Friday, but PAGASA said it may loop over the West Philippine Sea on Sunday.
PAGASA also monitored Tropical Storm Kong-Rey some 1,825 km east of Central Luzon, with maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 80 km/h, moving west northwestward at 25 km/h.
PAGASA earlier said Kong-Rey may enter the PAR between Saturday and Sunday, and develop into a typhoon on Monday.
Upon entering the PAR, the weather disturbance will be named "Leon."
In its 24-hour weather forecast, PAGASA said the southwesterly windflow will bring rains over western sections of Southern Luzon and Visayas.
Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, Occidental Mindoro, and Palawan will see cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the southwesterly windflow.
These moderate to at times heavy rains may cause flash floods or landslides.
Meanwhile, localized thunderstorms may bring cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms over Metro Manila and the rest of the country.
These severe thunderstorms may trigger possible flash floods or landslides.
State meteorologists said Luzon will have moderate to strong winds and moderate to rough coastal conditions.
Visayas and Mindanao will experience slight to moderate winds and moderate to rough coastal conditions.
Sunrise in Metro Manila will be at 5:50 a.m. on Sunday. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/VBL, GMA Integrated News
