4 areas still under Signal No. 1 as Julian heads to Taiwan

Signal No. 1 remains hoisted over Batanes, Babuyan Islands and the northern and western portions of Ilocos Norte as Typhoon Julian (international name: Krathon) accelerates northward toward Taiwan at 15 kph.

According to PAGASA’s daily weather forecast on Wednesday afternoon, Julian was last seen 275 kilometers west northwest of Itbayat, Batanes and outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

It had maximum sustained winds of 165 kph and gustiness of up to 205 kph.

As the areas under Signal No. 1 will experience winds of 39 to 61 kph or intermittent rains over the next 36 hours.

Based on a weather advisory on Wednesday, Julian will also continue to bring scattered rains and thunderstorms over Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, and Central Luzon within the next 24 hours.

A gale warning is still in effect over the northern seaboard of northern Luzon, while the moderate to rough sea conditions may be observed within the next 24 hours nationwide over the following areas:

  • the seaboard of Ilocos Norte
  • the remaining seaboards of Ilocos Region and the northeastern seaboard of mainland Cagayan
  • the seaboard of Zambales
  • the remaining seaboard of Cagayan

Julian is expected to make a landfall on Thursday morning after re-entering the PAR, but will only directly affect Batanes.

It is predicted to still be within PAR by Saturday and rapidly weaken once it hits the Taiwan landmass.— Jiselle Anne C. Casucian/BM, GMA Integrated News
