Torrential rains still expected over parts of Luzon due to Habagat —PAGASA

Torrential rains still expected over parts of Luzon due to Habagat —PAGASA

The Southwest Monsoon or Habagat may still bring torrential rains over parts of Luzon on Friday, as the region continues to reel from the effects of Typhoon Carina and heavy monsoon rains.

In a 24-hour public weather forecast, state weather bureau PAGASA said Habagat is affecting Luzon and the Visayas while localized thunderstorms are affecting Mindanao.

PAGASA warned of possible flooding or landslides in the Ilocos Region, Batanes, and Babuyan Islands as these areas may experience from heavy to intense monsoon rains with at times torrential rains.

Bataan, Zambales, Pampanga, and Benguet are expected to have occasional rains from moderate to heavy with at times intense. Flash floods or landslides are possible.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, meanwhile, may experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms, from moderate to at times heavy rains, which may also lead to flashfloods or landslides.

The Visayas are expected to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms. Flash floods or landslides may happen during severe thunderstorms.

In Mindanao, the same weather conditions are expected, according to PAGASA.

For wind and coastal water conditions, PAGASA said the northern and western sections of Luzon may encounter strong winds and moderate to rough coastal waters of up to 4 meters.

Visayas and the rest of Luzon are expected to have moderate to strong winds and moderate to rough coastal waters of up to 3.4 meters.

Meanwhile, Mindanao may experience moderate to strong winds and moderate to rough coastal waters of up to 2.8 meters.

A low pressure area was located 1,035 km east of southeastern Mindanao as of 3 a.m., according to PAGASA.

Police said 21 people were reported killed as a result of Carina and Habagat.

The inclement weather has prompted many local government units, including in Metro Manila, to declare a state of calamity.  —Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA Integrated News
