590 mm of rain in NCR, nearby areas from Monday morning to Wednesday afternoon —PAGASA

More rainfall during enhanced Habagat in 2012 than this week’s rains —PAGASA

Metro Manila and nearby provinces saw 590.1 mm of rainfall in 57 hours this week, comparable to the 1,007 mm of rainfall experienced in 72 hours in 2012 when Typhoon Gener enhanced the Habagat, PAGASA said.

The 57-hour period covers the period from 8 a.m. on Monday to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, PAGASA Assistant Weather Services chief Chris Perez said in a 24 Oras interview.

“May bagyo din noon [2012] na halos kapareho ng pagkilos ng bagyong si Carina. Hindi tumama ng ating bansa, kumilos papunta sa Taiwan area, at nagpaibayo din ng Habagat… Kung titignan natin ang 2012, mas maraming paulan in a span of three days, pero eto ngang current episode di pa tapos baka mas mahigitan pa ang 1,007 mm na naitala natin in a three-day period during the 2012 Habagat,” said on Wednesday.

(There was also a typhoon back then that was almost the same movement as Super Typhoon Carina. It didn’t hit the country, it moved towards the Taiwan area, and also enhanced the Southwest Monsoon… If we look at 2012, there was more rainfall in a span of three days, but our current episode isn’t over yet and might beat the 1007 mm record in a three-day period during the 2012 Southwest Monsoon.)

Perez said that the rainfall being experienced in Metro Manila and other Luzon areas should not be compared to the rainfall experienced during Tropical Storm Ondoy.

“Magkaibang weather system sila eh. Mas magandang impormasyon na tinignan natin 'yung Habagat episode noong 2012… Kaya natin ikukumpara dahil pareho silang weather system na Habagat at pareho ng sitwasyon na halos pinag-ibayo ng dalawang bagyo sa silangang bahagi ng ating bansa,” he explained.

(They are different weather systems. It would be better information to look at the Southwest Monsoon episode in 2012… The reason why we are comparing them is because they are both Southwest Monsoon weather systems and are both the same situations where it was enhanced by two typhoons at the eastern part of the country)

The super typhoon may continue to enhance the Southwest Monsoon and bring continuous rainfall in Metro Manila and other nearby areas until Friday.

“May panaka-nakang pag-ulan, then gradually mababawasan yung episode ng pag-ulan ngayong darating na weekend. That is, kung di nga magbabago yung forecast movement natin, [yung] intensity ng bagyo, at yung immediate effect nito sa current Habagat na nakakaapekto nga dito sa western section ng Luzon including Metro Manila,” Perez added.

(There are intermittent rains, then gradually lesser episodes of rains until the coming weekend. This is if the forecast movement, the typhoon intensity, and its immediate effect on the current Southwest Monsoon that affects the western section ng Luzon including Metro Manila does not change.) — Jiselle Anne C.
