PH may experience 13 to 16 cyclones this 2024 —PAGASA

An estimated 13 to 16 tropical cyclones could hit the country this year, an official from state weather bureau PAGASA said on Tuesday.

At a Palace press briefing, PAGASA Climate Monitoring and Prediction Section chief Ana Solis said this figure is below the average of 19 to 20 cyclones every year.

“For now po, by this year mga around 13 to 16 na bagyo po ang possible po this year – so, ibig sabihin po, maaaring below normal dahil mararamdaman po kasi natin iyong possible effect ng La Niña is last quarter of the year,” Solis said.

“So, for now po 13 to 16 [cyclones] po for this year iyong ating predicted which is below normal doon sa average na 19 to 20 po,” he added.

(Around 13 to 16 cyclones are possible this year, which means that is below normal because we will feel the possible effect of La Niña in the last quarter of the year.  So for now we are predicting 13 to 16 cyclones, which is below the average of 19 to 20.)

Earlier, the Department of Science and Technology said that there is 62% that the La Niña would be felt this June.

PAGASA earlier said La Niña is characterized by unusually cooler than average sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific (CEEP).

La Niña is usually associated with above normal rainfall conditions, PAGASA said. Its potential adverse impacts include floods and landslide in vulnerable areas, it added. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
