Jenny to enhance Habagat, cause rains in south Luzon, Visayas on Sunday

Tropical Depression Jenny may enhance the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat to bring occasional rains over the western portion of Southern Luzon and the Visayas on Sunday, the weather bureau PAGASA said on Friday night.

According to its tropical cyclone bulletin for 11 p.m., Jenny's proximity to extreme Northern Luzon may cause heavy rainfall over Batanes and the Babuyan Islands on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The tropical depression was spotted 1,240 kms east of Central Luzon and slowed down as it moved westward at 15 kph.

Jenny has maximum sustained winds of 55 kph and gustiness of up to 70 kph.

The tropical depression is predicted to bring moderate to rough seas over the coastal waters of extreme Northern Luzon and the northern mainland Cagayan by Monday.

The current forecast did not a tropical cyclone wind signal, but it may possibly be raised over extreme Northern Luzon on Sunday or Monday.

The enhanced Southwest Monsoon may bring gusty conditions on these days in the following areas:

  • Sunday - Palawan, Romblon, most of Visayas, and Dinagat Islands
  • Monday - Most of MIMAROPA and Visayas, and Dinagat Islands

A landfall scenario over extreme Northern Luzon or northeastern mainland Cagayan has not yet been ruled out as Jenny steadily intensifies.

It is predicted to turn into a tropical storm by Saturday and reach the typhoon category by late Monday or Tuesday. —NB, GMA Integrated News
