3 areas under Signal No. 1 as Obet moves toward Luzon Strait

State weather bureau PAGASA said Friday that Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 is still up over three areas as Tropical Depression Obet was moving toward the Luzon Strait.

In its 11 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said these areas are under TCWS No. 1:

  • Batanes
  • Babuyan Islands, and
  • the northeastern portion of mainland Cagayan (Santa Ana, Gonzaga)

From Friday through Saturday early morning, moderate to heavy with at times intense rains are expected over Batanes, Babuyan Islands, northern portions of Ilocos Norte, Apayao, and mainland Cagayan.

Light to moderate with at times heavy rains may be experienced over the rest of Cagayan, Apayao, and Ilocos Norte.

“Under these conditions, flooding and rain-induced landslides are likely, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazard as identified in hazard maps and in localities with significant antecedent rainfall,” PAGASA said.

Obet was located 205 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes with maximum sustained winds of 45 km per hour and gustiness of up to 55 km/h while moving westward at 20 km/h.

According to PAGASA, Obet may traverse over or very close to the Batanes-Babuyan Islands area between Friday afternoon or evening.

Obet may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility Saturday morning or afternoon, PAGASA added. —LBG, GMA News
