Habagat to bring rain showers; tropical depression may enter PAR Wednesday

The Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) is affecting the western sections of Northern and Central Luzon on Tuesday and will bring rain showers over several areas, PAGASA said in its weather forecast.

Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, Zambales, and Bataan will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the monsoon and Intertropical Convergence Zone. Flash floods or landslides may result due to moderate to at times heavy rains.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country meanwhile will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the monsoon and localized thunderstorms. During severe thunderstorms, flash floods or landslides may occur.

PAGASA is also monitoring a tropical depression located outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

As of Tuesday at 3 a.m., the tropical depression was located at 1,680 km east northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon.

It has maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 55 km/h.

The tropical depression is moving west southwestward at 20 km/h.

"Base sa wind forecast ng Metraweather, 'yung sentro ng tropical depression, posible kung 'di magbabago ang bilis, bukas nasa loob na ng PAR," GMA resident meteorologist Nathaniel "Mang Tani" Cruz said in a report on Unang Balita.

(Based on the wind forecast of Metraweather, if it will not change speed, the center of the tropical depression will enter PAR tomorrow.)

"Habang nasa loob ito ng PAR, hihina ang Hanging Habagat," he added.

(While the tropical depression is inside PAR, the Southwest Monsoon will weaken.)

Cruz said the tropical depression's track is almost the same as Typhoon Henry (international name: Hinnamnor). Henry exited PAR on Sunday.

Coastal waters on Tuesday will be moderate in Extreme Northern Luzon, and slight to moderate in the rest of the country.

Sunrise was at 5:44 a.m. while sunset will be at 6:05 p.m. —KG, GMA News
