Signal No. 1 up over Kalayaan Islands due to Odette

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 remains hoisted over Kalayaan Islands in Palawan on Sunday due to Typhoon Rai (named Odette when it was inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility), PAGASA said in its weather forecast.

Kalayaan Islands have strong winds prevailing or expected within 36 hours, and will have light to moderate with at times heavy rains.

Strong breeze to near gale winds will also prevail over Kalayaan Islands.

PAGASA said it is highly likely that the TCWS over Kalayaan Islands will be lifted before noon on Sunday.

However, it warned of coastal flooding resulting from hazardous surf conditions.

The seaboards of Kalayaan Islands will have rough to very high seas (waves up to 12 meters), making it risky for all types of sea vessels.

At 4 a.m., the eye of Typhoon Rai was at 320 km northwest of Pag-asa Island, Kalayaan, Palawan. It has maximum sustained winds of 195 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 240 km/h. Rai is moving west northwestward at 25 km/h. From its center, strong winds or higher than that extend outwards up to 400 km.

PAGASA said Rai may still intensify within the next 12 hours. However, by Monday afternoon or evening, it may be downgraded to severe tropical storm.

Meanwhile, the shear line will be affecting the eastern section of Luzon on Sunday while the northeast monsoon will affect the rest of northern and central Luzon.

The Bicol Region, Quezon, and Kalayaan Islands will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms brought about by the shear line and Typhoon Rai with possible flash floods or landslides due to moderate to at times heavy rains.

Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Cagayan Valley, and the rest of Calabarzon will have cloudy skies with rains due to the northeast monsoon with no significant impact.

The Ilocos Region and Cordillera Administrative Region will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains due to the northeast monsoon with no significant impact.

The rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to localized thunderstorm with possible flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms.

A gale warning was raised over the seaboards of Northern Luzon, and the eastern and western seaboards of Central and Southern Luzon due to Rai and the Northern Monsoon.

Sunrise will be at 6:15 a.m. and set by 5:31 p.m. —BAP/KG, GMA News
