Odette intensifies further, makes landfall over Siargao, Dinagat Islands
Typhoon Odette further intensified as it made landfall over Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands on Thursday afternoon, according to state weather bureau PAGASA.
"Typhoon 'ODETTE' has made landfall over Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte at 1:30 PM today," PAGASA said in its 2 p.m. bulletin.
In its Facebook post, PAGASA said Odette made a second landfall over Dinagat Islands at 3:10 p.m.
Odette (international name: Rai) — labelled by the Hawaii-based Joint Typhoon Warning Center of the United States Navy and Air Force as a super typhoon — is expected to continue moving west northwestward or westward "and may make another landfall over Dinagat Islands" on Thursday afternoon, it added.
Because of this, several areas in the Visayas and Mindanao are under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 4, according to PAGASA's 2 p.m. weather bulletin. They are:
- Southern Leyte,
- southwestern portion of Leyte (Hilongos, Bato, Matalom), Bohol,

"'Odette' may see some slight weakening as it crosses northeastern Mindanao, Visayas, and Palawan, but it is forecast to remain as a typhoon," PAGASA said.
Evacuations, stranded passengers
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), a total of 45,383 people or 12,237 families have been preemptively evacuated so far due to Odette's threat.
Based on NDRRMC's report as of Thursday morning, evacuations were reported in Eastern Visayas, which reported a landslide incident, and in Caraga region in Mindanao.
On the other hand, a total of 3,891 passengers, 1,745 rolling cargoes, 22 vessels, and three motorbancas were stranded in Calabarzon, Bicol, Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas, and Caraga, the NDRRMC said.
Thirty-six ports were reported non-operational or have suspended trips, of which, 10 have resumed in Bicol.
In Cagayan de Oro City, floods have rendered some streets not passable to motorists.
Citing the Roads and Traffic Administration of Cagayan de Oro City, GMA Regional TV One Mindanao reported that as of 8:28 a.m., the following roads are not passable in all types of vehicles:
- Entering Apovel Subd.
- Villarin St.
- Kauswagan Highway-NHA (northbound)
- CM. Recto-Osmeña to USTP
- Osmeña Extn.
- Corrales Extn. (CU to Gaabucayan St.)
- Kagay-an Bridge
- Canceled flights
Nearly a hundred local flights were canceled Thursday due to inclement weather conditions brought about by Typhoon Odette.
According to the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), some 49 arrival flights and 50 departure flights scheduled were canceled.
Dinagat Islands
In Dinagat Islands in the Caraga region, a total of 6,310 people in 1,997 families have been evacuated, according to Governor Arlene Bag-ao.
"Ang huling update sa akin ng PAGASA, ang unang landfall ay sa Dinagat, at ito ay darating na pinakamalakas nang around 12 noon to 6 p.m.," Bag-ao told Super Radyo dzBB.
(The last update from state weather bureau PAGASA was the first landfall will be in Dinagat and it will be at its strongest between 12 noon to 6 p.m.)
Dinagat Islands was under TCWS No. 4 as of Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said consular services in four provinces affected by Odette have been temporarily suspended.
The DFA said operations of the following DFA consular offices are suspended in Bacolod, Butuan, Cebu, and Tacloban starting Thursday. —KBK/AOL, GMA News
