Expect more downpour in May due to thunderstorms — PAGASA
Weather bureau PAGASA on Monday said more rainfall will be experienced in Metro Manila area due to thunderstorms most especially this coming May.
PAGASA weather forecaster Samuel Duran told GMA News Online that thunderstorms are normal during this period.
“Possible naman po kasi ‘yang mga thunderstorms natin lalo na papasok na ang Mayo. Madalas na po ‘yang thunderstorms,” Duran said.
However, Duran noted that the rainfall recently are not yet considered as onset of the wet season, explaining that the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat should occur first.
He said the wet season usually starts around May or June.
“Mayo kadalasan or June pa ‘yan. Dapat po magka-Southwest Monsoon muna o Habagat bago tayo makapag-declare (ng wet season),” Duran said.
Due to the expected rains, Duran brushed aside the possibility of water shortage in Angat Dam, which supplies over 90% of water needs in Metro Manila and nearby areas.
As of Monday, the water level in Angat Dam was recorded at 191.08 meters, which is higher than its minimum operating level of 180 meters.
He said the storage in the dam will suffice until the wet season in May or June. — RSJ, GMA News
