Typhoon Kammuri seen to affect SEA Games venues next week

The typhoon hovering outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility with international name Kammuri is seen to cross the venues of the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games next week, PAGASA said on Thursday.

In a press briefing, PAGASA weather specialist Raymond Ordinario said Kammuri, which will be named as Tisoy once it enters PAR, will traverse the areas where the SEA Games events are set to be held.

“Makikita natin dadaan nga ang bagyong ito sa mga areas kung saan gaganapin yugng mga palaro para sa ating SEA Games,” he said.

According to Ordinario, Tuesday and Wednesday will be a crucial period due to the typhoon.

“Kailangan nating mag-close monitoring. Tuesday, magsisimula ang pag-ulan dito sa Metro Manila area at Central Luzon, then hanggang makalabas ito ng Wednesday,” he said.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 3 is the highest possible wind signal that can be raised over the areas where Kammurri will travel, PAGASA Weather Division chief Esperanza Cayanan said.

“Sa ngayon, ang nakikita nating highest na Wind Signal natin ay Wind Signal No, 3 dito sa dadaanan ng bagyo,” she said.

PAGASA has been coordinating with the multi-sports event organizer Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC) in relation to the weather situation over the venues.

“Ang ating weather briefer doon, tuwing alas sais ng umaga, ay bibigyan ng briefing lahat ng members doon  kasama na ang PHISGOC,” said Deputy Administrator for Operations and Services of PAGASA Landrico Dalida Jr.

“Sila ang magbabato ng weather information na ito sa mga satellite area  kung saan gaganapin lahat ng activities,” he added.

Changes to SEA Games plans will depend on PHISGOC, Cayanan said.

Kammuri is expected to enter PAR between Saturday and Sunday morning.

At 10 a.m., the typhoon was located at 1,430 kilometers east of Visayas outside PAR with maximum sustained winds of 120 kph and gustiness up to 150 kph moving west northwest at 10 kph. — BM, GMA News
