Onyok intensifies into typhoon as it continues northwest

Onyok has intensified into a typhoon but is currently "less likely" to make landfall in the forecast period from Sunday evening to Monday morning, PAGASA said.

In its 11 p.m. severe weather bulletin on Sunday, the state weather bureau said that Typhoon Onyok's eye was estimated to be 285 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes as of 10 p.m., with maximum sustained winds of up to 120 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 150 kph.

Onyok is moving northwest at 25 kph and is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility Monday evening.

In the meantime, the typhoon's trough is expected to bring scattered, light to moderate rain showers and isolated thunderstorms to the Cagayan Valley region

Tropical cyclone wind signal number 1 has been issued for the Batanes and Babuyan islands. Sea travel, especially by small vessels, is considered risky in these areas, and in the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon in general. — BM, GMA News
