Typhoon Paeng intensifies; fair conditions expected across the PHL

Typhoon Paeng (international name Trami) continued to intensify overnight, but was still too far away to affect country as of Monday morning, weather service PAGASA reported in a 4 a.m. forecast.

At 3 a.m., Paeng was 1,100 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, and had 170 kilometer per hour winds which could gust up to 210 kph.

While Paeng was still moving west-northwestwards at 20 kph, its course was now taking it further north, with PAGASA now predicting that the typhoon avoid the Philippines and would make landfall over Taiwan.

Be that as it may, PAGASA still expected to raise Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals over extreme northern Luzon by Thursday, at the earliest.

Paeng was also still expected to make its effects felt over the Batanes and Babuyan Islands by Friday, after which it would exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday.

For Monday, PAGASA predicted that conditions across the entire archipelago would be generally fair, except for some afternoon or evening scattered thunderstorms.

Coastal waters over the eastern seaboards of the country would be moderate to rough, with slight to moderate conditions expected over the rest of the coasts. — DVM, GMA News
