Basyang moving towards southern Palawan —PAGASA

Tropical Depression Basyang continues to move towards the southern part of Palawan on Wednesday morning.

Weather bureau PAGASA said that as of 7 a.m., the center of Basyang was estimated at 255 kilometers south of Cuyo, Palawn or 310 west southwest of Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental.

The cyclone was packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour with gusts of up to 60 kph. It was moving west southwest at 26 kph.

PAGASA said Basyang is expected to make landfall over southern Palawan by Wednesday night and cross the island until Thursday morning before heading toward the West Philippine Sea.

It is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Friday morning.

Only Palawan, including the Calamian and Cuyo groups of islands, are under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal Number 1.

PAGASA said that flooding and landslides are still possible in Palawan, Visayas, Bicol, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao and Caraga due to moderate to heavy rains brought on by the cyclone.

Despite the lifting of cyclone alert signals in other areas, the weather bureau said sea travel will still be risky in Northern Luzon, Southern Luzon, Central Luzon and the Visayas. —ALG, GMA News
