Northeast monsoon or amihan to strengthen over the weekend

The northeast monsoon or amihan will strengthen beginning on Saturday and will be felt from the coasts of northern Luzon to Mindanao, according to a report by GMA resident meteorologist Nathaniel Cruz on "24 Oras" on Thursday.

He said the large waves that amihan will generate around northern Luzon will pose a threat to smaller seacrafts.

Meanwhile, rainfall is expected in Southern Luzon and Eastern Visayas due to the effects of the tail-end of a cold front.

Eastern Luzon and Visayas or Cagayan Valley to Samar and Leyte in particular will have steady rainfall all day, while rain prevails over Cordillera, Luzon, and Western Visayas in the afternoon.

Zamboanga peninsula will have weak rainfall in the morning and both Davao and SOCCSARGEN will experience thunderstorms in the afternoon. — Rie Takumi/BAP, GMA News
