Tropical Depression Julian moves west northwest; Signal No. 1 up over Batanes

Tropical Depression Julian is affecting parts of Northern Luzon on Wednesday, prompting PAGASA to raise Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 1 in some areas, News To Go reported.

Signal No. 1 is in effect over Batanes, Northern Cagayan including Babuyan Group of Islands, Apayao and Ilocos Norte, GMA News' resident meteorologist Nathaniel Cruz reported.

PAGASA said these areas may expect heavy rain with strong winds in the next few hours especially at night.

Preschool classes are automatically suspended in areas where Signal No. 1 is hoisted.

In its 4 a.m. update, PAGASA said Julian was 720 kilometers east of Calayan, Cagayan, moving towards a west-northwest direction at 25 kilometers per hour.

Julian has maximum sustained winds of up to 45 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 55 kilometers per hour near the center.

The rest of the country, meanwhile, will experience light to moderate rains with isolated rainshowers with an Intertropical Convergence Zone affecting Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. —Erwin Colcol/KG, GMA News
