Signal No. 1 still up in Northern Luzon as Typhoon Gener moves northward
Batanes, Northern Cagayan, and the Babuyan Group of Islands are still under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal (TCWS) No. 1 as Typhoon Gener (international name: Malakas) makes its way to Northern Taiwan.
Weather bureau PAGASA reported Friday that 30 to 60 kilometer per hour winds are expected around these areas in Northern Luzon for the next 36 hours, along with wave heights of 1.25 to 4.0 meters in open sea.
Rice crops in their flowering stage may suffer significant damage while structures made of light materials may suffer light damage from the impact of the wind, PAGASA warned.
Gener was last located 245 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes and has maintained its course as it slows down on its approach to Northern Taiwan.
It has maximum sustained winds of up to 150 kph near the center, gustiness of up to 185 kph, and is expected to move 24 kph northwest.
PAGASA predicts that it will be 380 km north of Basco by Saturday morning, 710 km north of Basco outside the PAR on Sunday, and 1,120 km north northeast of Basco by Monday.
Meanwhile, parts of Mindanao will experience light to moderate rains for one to two hours.
Thunderstorms are also more likely to develop over the National Capital Region, Benguet, Ilocos Norte, Northern Mindanao, the Davao Region, Metro Cebu, and Albay over the next 12 hours. — VVP, GMA News
