TS Carina intensifies; 14 areas under storm signals
Tropical Storm Carina intensified again as it threatened the Isabela-Cagayan area Sunday morning, weather service PAGASA warned in a 5 a.m. bulletin.
At 4 a.m., Carina was 205 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora, moving northwest at 20 kph.
Carina had maximum sustained winds of up to 85 kph, which can gust up to 100 kph. Additionally, rainfall amounts within the the storm's 400 km diameter was from moderate to heavy.
Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal Number 2 was raised over:
- Isabela,
- Ilocos Norte,
- Apayao,
- Kalinga,
- Abra, and
- Cagayan including the Babuyan Islands.
PAGASA warned that a storm surge of up to two meters was possible along coastal areas under Signal 2, with open sea wave heights expected to be from 4.1 to 14 meters high.
Signal No. 1 was also up over:
- Ifugao,
- Benguet,
- Ilocos Sur,
- La Union,
- Mt. Province,
- Nueva Vizcaya,
- Quirino, and
- Aurora.
Open sea wave heights along areas under Signal 1 were predicted to be from 1.25 to 4 meters high.
Additionally, areas under both Signal 1 and 2, the rest of Central and of northern Luzon, Quezon, and Camarines Norte will experience moderate to heavy rain, which may trigger flash floods and landslides.
The rest of the country will meanwhile experience cloudy conditions with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms.
According to PAGASA's projections, Carina will make landfall over the Cagayan-Isabela area Sunday afternoon.
By Monday morning the storm will be 685 kms west-northwest of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte and outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.
