Storm signals raised as LPA intensifies into TD Kabayan


The approaching low pressure area (LPA) east of the Philippines intensified into a tropical depression Thursday morning, prompting state weather authorities to issue the first severe weather bulletin for the cyclone locally codenamed "Kabayan".
 
As of 10 a.m., PAGASA posited Kabayan 75km east of Virac, Catanduanes, with maximum sustained winds of 45 kph near its center. Kabayan is expected to make landfall in Aurora, Quezon, by Friday.

Storm signals

Storm Signal no. 1 has been raised in the following areas, which may experience up to 60 kph winds within the next 36 hours:
 
  • Catanduanes
  • Camarines Sur
  • Camarines Norte
  • Aurora
  • Northern Quezon, including Polillo Island
     
Residents along the coasts of these areas are advised to be wary of wave heights of up to 4m—roughly the height of a one-storey house—in open waters. No storm surge warnings have been posted as of this time.

Kabayan is currently moving west-northwest at 19 kph and is expected to move through central or northern Luzon in the coming days. It is forecast to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Saturday afternoon. — GMA News
