Typhoon Neneng won't make landfall, but expect rough seas

Typhoon Neneng (Phanfone) won't make landfall in the Philippines, but will make for rough seas off the eastern part of the country.

PAGASA forecaster Gener Quitlong told radio dzBB the track of Typhoon Neneng, which entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) before noon, will take it toward Japan.

"Baka hindi ito mag-landfall, diretso ito sa Japan," he said.

Forecast data from The Weather Company shows that Neneng will likely just graze the North Eastern corner of the PAR before heading off toward Japan within 24 hours:

However, Quitlong also said that although Neneng will enhance the Southwest Monsoon, it will not have as much an effect as the inter-tropical convergence zone (ITCZ).

PAGASA's 11 a.m. advisory said Neneng may enhance the northeasterly winds that may make sea conditions in the northern and eastern seaboards of Northern Luzon rough to very rough.

As of 10 a.m., it said the typhoon was estimated at 1,385 km east of Itbayat, Batanes, with maximum winds of 175 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 210 kph.

It said the typhoon is forecast to move northwest at 20 kph, and may be 1,180 km northeast of Itbayat or outside the PAR by Saturday morning. — Joel Locsin/VC/TJD, GMA News
