TS Basyang moves toward Panay, 22 areas under storm signals


At least 22 areas were under storm signals early Saturday as Tropical Storm Basyang (international name Kajiki) moved towards Panay island in the Western Visayas, state weather forecasters said. PAGASA said Basyang was 20 km southwest of Iloilo City as of 4 a.m., with maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph. Basyang brings rainfall of 5 to 15 mm per hour (moderate to heavy) within its 400-km diameter. Basyang is expected to move west at 39 kph and is expected to be 574 km northwest of Puerto Princesa City or outside the Philippine area of responsibility by Sunday morning. Tropical Storm Basyang had crossed Negros and Guimaras Island in the Western Visayas. Areas under Storm Signal No. 2 included:

PAGASA advised residents in low-lying and mountainous areas under storm signals to be alert against possible flash floods and landslides. It also advised those in coastal areas under Storm Signal No. 2 to be alert against storm surges., Stormy weather PAGASA's 5 a.m. bulletin said Northern Palawan including Calamian Islands, Western and Central Visayas will experience stormy weather with rough to very rough seas. The rest of Palawan, Mindoro provinces, Romblon, Masbate, Leyte, Camotes Island, Biliran province, Misamis Occidental and Zamboanga del Norte will have rains with gusty winds with moderate to rough seas. Marinduque, Samar provinces, Bicol region, the rest of Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao and Caraga will be cloudy with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms. Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains. The rest of the Mindanao will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms. Gale warning Meanwhile, PAGASA said strong to gale-force winds associated with the northeast monsoon and Tropical Storm Basyang will affect the eastern seaboards of Central and Southern Luzon and of Visayas and the southern seaboard of Southern Luzon. Moderate to strong winds from the northeast will prevail over the rest of Luzon and coming from the northwest to southwest over the rest of the Visayas and Mindanao. Coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be moderate to rough. "Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the eastern seaboard of Central Luzon, eastern seaboard and southern seaboards of Southern Luzon and eastern seaboard of Visayas due to the surge of northeast monsoon," warned the weather service. — DVM, GMA News
