Flood, landslide warnings up over Luzon and Visayas for Tuesday

Flash flood and landslide warnings are up in Metro Manila and parts of Luzon and Visayas over the next 24 hours as Tropical Storm Maring (Trami) continued its slow crawl eastward Monday afternoon, state weather forecasters said.

In a radio interview, PAGASA forecaster Jori Loiz said there is a chance Maring may intensify as it interacts with a nearby low-pressure area, and make a U-turn.

"(But) definitely wala tayong nakikitang track na tatama siya sa kalupaan," Loiz said in an interview on dzBB radio.

When asked when Maring will exit the Philippine area of responsibility, he said, "it's either Wednesday or Thursday."

Loiz said their models show Maring is interacting with a nearby low-pressure area, adding Maring may intensify if it absorbs the weaker LPA.

In a separate interview, PAGASA forecaster Connie Dadivas said Maring will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon.

"Patuloy ito hahatak ng habagat (It will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon)," she said.

In its 5 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said that as of 4 p.m., Maring was estimated at 580 km east of Itbayat, Batanes.

Maring packed maximum sustained winds of 75 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph, and is forecast to move east at 7 kph.

Flash floods, landslides

"Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Panay Island and the provinces of Benguet and Occidental Mindoro will experience monsoon rains which may trigger flash floods and landslides," PAGASA said in its bulletin.

It added Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, the rest of Luzon and Visayas will have "cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms."

The rest of Mindanao will be "partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms," it added.

PAGASA also said moderate to strong winds from the southwest will prevail throughout the archipelago and the coastal waters will be moderate to rough.

Gale warning

Meanwhile, strong to gale-force winds associated with the southwest monsoon enhanced by Maring may affect the seaboards of Luzon.

"Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves," it said. — TJD, GMA News
