Olongapo Grade 11 students develop automated oil spill cleaning system
Some Grade 11 students from Regional Science High School III in Olongapo City developed an automated oil spill cleaning system.
"We decided to create RapunZpill because we wanted to introduce a more efficient and more ecologically friendly solution to clean up oil spills," said Kyan Dimakiling, one of the developers, in Martin Javier's Game Changer report on ''24 Oras'' on Friday.
While it is well known that human and dog hair may be used to collect oil, the students stated that they would like the process to be automated.
"The discovery that hair could collect oil was a breakthrough, but it was not safe because it uses manual labor. Naisip po namin na (We thought) we could automate this process," said Samantha Ferido, also a developer.
The prototype, which has a distance sensor, can gather up to 92.54% of the oil content in mock tests.
The report said the students had three designs before coming up with the final product. —Sherylin Untalan/VBL, GMA Integrated News
