Portable machine makes disinfectant using salt, water, and vinegar

Did you know that you can make a disinfectant with just salt, water, and vinegar?

HOCLOMAC is a portable device that can generate a disinfectant called hypochlorous acid.

The project was funded by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development.

“So ang naging innovation po natin ginawa nating mas portable. Mas maliit at mas mobile siya para kahit sa mga small clinics or sa mga hospital,” said Francis Aldrine Uy, founder and CEO of Usher Technologies Inc., in the latest feature of “Game Changer” in “24 Oras'' on Friday.

(So our innovation is that this is more portable. This is small and mobile, so it can fit small clinics or hospitals.)

In making the hypochlorous acid-based disinfectant through HOCLOMAC, you have to mix 20 grams of salt with one liter of water. After one minute, the electrolysis will take place.

Then the vinegar will be mixed into the solution to balance the pH level.

Carissa Santos, an engineer from Usher Technologies, Inc., explained that a pH level between 4 and 6 must be maintained for it to be safely used on the skin.

And after five minutes, you now have your disinfectant!

Among the interesting features of making the solution using HOCLOMAC is that you can adjust the concentration depending on where you will use it.

“Pag binaba natin (yung concentration) puwede i-apply as much as alternative sa alcohol. In other industries, it is actually used to wash food, mga meat, mga vegetables,” said Uy.

(When we lower the concentration, we can apply it as an alternative to alcohol. In other industries, it is actually used to wash food, meats, and vegetables.)

HOCLOMAC not only generates disinfectant at a low cost but can also be easily deployed to clinics and hospitals in remote places, the report said.

HOCLOMAC will be showcased at the WorldInvent Singapore International Invention Show on July 9-11. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/VBL, GMA Integrated News
