Teachers wary of possible AI use by some students
Amid teachers' concerns over the use of artificial intelligence in schoolwork, the Education Department and several universities believed that the use of AI was unavoidable, and they were thus creating guidelines on its use.
While University of Santo Tomas Department of Philosophy faculty member Professor Franz Giuseppe Cortez was not completely against the use of AI, he was concerned that students may become excessively reliant on it.
"We can speak of the demise of thinking itself, the death of thinking, the death of interpretation," said Cortez in Mariz Umali's Monday "24 Oras" report.
However, given the speed at which the technology was developing, several experts suggested it was time to consider the ways AI may be used.
"A chatbot can be an opportunity to have dynamic ways of teaching grammar," said Data Ethics PH Executive Director Dominic Ligot. "I think it's a bigger sin to ban it or to discourage the use of it."
Several universities have thus started to craft guidelines on the use of AI.
Even the Education Department accepted the fact that technology was developing at a rapid pace and artificial intelligence could not be avoided.
Thus, the DepEd itself was creating clear rules on the correct way the technology may be used and even may be included in the curriculum.
"Talagang kailangan nating pag aralan and we do believe that DEPED also has to adapt to the times, the changing times. And that's why we need to come out with the necessary policies regarding that," said DepEd Spokesperson Attorney Michael Poa. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
